  • Call for Article Ideas

Folks, I'm planning the 2011 schedule right now. It's due to my bosses in June. I have about 2/3 of the articles and authors I need, but there's still room for a few more. If you've ever thought about writing an article for the magazine, there's never been a better time than now.

Best thing to do is send me an email with a quick description of what you'd like to write.

No run of the mill stairs that average Joe doesn't have a clue how to do. Than you can do a follow up on the real hard thing. I think sweeping stairs unless done in stone are a a waste of money and time as there aren't enough products out there with the dimensional stability to last. Usualy with wrap around stairs etc the mitres open up.

I'd love to see the detailed construction of that Gazebo. I've built a fair number of gazebos, but none with a cupola like that.

All I really need to see is a pic of the framing and I will figure it out.

I want to see a pic from inside the gazebo, looking up at the exposed framing.

By the way, perhaps a reason for PDM not taking you up on the stairs article is that the editor for PDM wrote a book on building stairs.

                  exposed rafters??????????
its all finished off with 1x6 t&g, they are 2 seperate roofs, so the cupola actually works.

Well the only thing about the steps is that they should be built as a unit and not installed 1 stringer at a time and there is not need for simpson to get rich off of stairs.
I was unaware of such a book. But than what would I know anyways.

Wow, very nice work on the pic for post 12/3/2011!
I'm assuming that this is your design.
Not to take anything away, It's a master peice, but is'nt the cupola a bit over-sized for the main roof...I have to ask?
Its been a few years since I had a customer willing to spring for a gazebo. The baker's dozen that I have done were all in Victorian styled turned posts; however, I am really liking the look of yours.
You can't see, but I am bowing right now... I do not run into many guys like you or I in our trade that are willing to do this level of craftsmanship even when they are getting paid to do so.
Last thing, I noticed there was no finial, what was decided on?

Here are a couple of poor quality pics of my first Gazebo, built about 35 years ago.

We had made a extra arch just in case we screwed up. I still have it and it has held it's shape all of these years. This was back in the day of real redwood.

Trust me when I say, we had no idea what we were doing back then.
